What is depression?

Depression is a state of mind where the person feels anxious mental condition. The person has negative thoughts and pessimistic deal with depressionfeeling, he remain continually in sad mood. The person feels alone and his thoughts can lead him to serious mental illness, schizophrenia and some time he tries for committing suicide.

Depression is not a sign of person weakness it has become a common disorder in today’s hectic world. There are many reasons of depression but one can easily identify the symptoms of depression and help the person to overcome it.

Only some symptoms can easily identifiable .The symptoms like getting weight or losing of weight, insomnia or excessive sleep can be the symptoms of depression. There can some other reason like guilt, helplessness, hopelessness, anxiety, fear, and decreased self esteem.

Treatment of Depression

Before treatment we should know that depression is not a disease, which can leave untreated. As depression is a persistent illness, it is suggested that successful temporary treatment be pooled with continuing, maintenance therapy. A depressive person can suffer chronic mental illness that requires medication and psychiatric therapy together. There are different treatments to cure depression, which you can star. There are some options for depression treatment.

Psycho-therapy

During the period of depression person remain upset this affects his work, family and social life. It becomes difficult for him to share his feelings. Psychotherapy involves various techniques to treat depression. Psychotherapy for depression may take two to twenty weeks for treatment.

The main technique of the therapy is counseling which has become synonym to psychotherapy. Psychotherapy involves not just the client but also the family. It is very important that family involve in the treatment because there are many reasons of depression runs in families.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This therapy (CBT) involves the treatment of depression, anxiety and any sort of mental illness. Cognitive therapy is based on how thought processes work, depressed people are more tending towards negative thought. The patients feel failure and become depressed but therapists try to change the thought process towards the optimistic side. It is very important for the therapist to be patient while listening to the patients

Interpersonal therapy (IPT)

The main approach of this therapy is just about the root problem of depression. It is very helpful for a person to come out of the disturbing relationship or events. It is short term therapy and mostly restricted to fifteen to twenty sessions. Each session lasts for about an hour.

Psychodynamic and group therapy Treatment

Psychodynamic therapy and group therapy are two different techniques for treating depression. They involve shock or conflicts at childhood and though considered short term the procedure takes time. People share their experiences with each other in group therapy and it proves to be very effective.

Drug Therapy

There are many different types of medicines for depression treatments that can be specially formulated and dosed to be effective for depression and individual type.
Pharmaceutical companies are producing many drugs for anti-depression.

Other Types of Therapy

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

Electric charges use to alter the chemical balance in the brain of patient. This therapy is used on those people who do not respond to drug treatment. Up to 90% of patients find rapid results. But the only side effect they suffer, temporary short term memory loss.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS)

VNS is a small electric generator device (similar to a pacemaker) that places in the chest of the patient with wires attached to the vagus nerve (a nerve that connects the neck to the brain). Electric charges are sent through the nerve to alter the chemical balance in the brain and normalize the frame of mind.

Herbal Therapy

Herbal therapy is also very effective in depression treatment. It is Eastern treatment style but now popular in Western medicine too.

Acupuncture/Acupressure

It is ancient Chinese form of homeopathic medicine using fine needles that stimulate internal responses to illnesses and balancing the internal chemistry. It is also very popular treatment in all over the world.
